PROUD TO BE A LA JOLLA PATRIOT!

Dear La Jolla Elementary Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!  I am honored to serve as your Principal this year, and I look forward to all of the amazing things our students will achieve.  Here at La Jolla, students come first, and we value the engagement and involvement of our parents.  Our school continues to provide education through Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) and opportunities for STEAM education and engagement that promote creativity and critical thinking.  Our teachers and staff continue to support our students with direct interactive instruction and instructional strategies that help our students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

We are excited that our school is participating in our district-wide Equity Institute!  Our Equity team works hard to ensure EQUITY for all, all the time.  Our school practices Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in addition to following "7 Habits" as a Leader In Me school.  Our district-wide curriculum for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies is used with fidelity to ensure that our students are receiving a well-rounded and comprehensive education.  Students are encouraged to join the 100 Mile Club where students are able to earn rewards while staying in shape!

We invite our parents to get involved with our African American Parent Advisory Council (AAPAC), our English Language Advisory Council (ELAC), our Patriot Parent Outreach group, and School Site Council.  In addition, parents who wish to volunteer at school are encouraged to go through the parent volunteer approval process; there are many areas where we can use your support!

The following are important things you should know:

Breakfast/Morning Drop-Off/Attendance:  The cafeteria opens at 7:20am for students who wish to eat breakfast at school.  When it is time for school to begin, students line up at 7:55am and are prepared for class at 8:00am.  Parents, please make sure you plan adequate time to navigate through the traffic to drop your child off in time for school.  Regular attendance is important for students' academic success (coming daily and arriving on time) and it prepares our students to be career-ready.  Please be encourage your child(ren) to get a good night's rest and breakfast each day so they are ready to learn when they arrive at school.

Leaving Early/Emergency Card Information: Except in extreme emergencies students will not be released the last 30 minutes of the school day. If you are going to check your child out from school early, you will need to show proper ID when arriving at the school.  Please be sure to keep your child's emergency card updated, and ensure that anyone authorized to pick up your child brings proper identification.  Children who are picked up late must be signed out by the parent or someone authorized to pick them up.

After School Pick-up:  It is our intention and responsibility to keep your child(ren) safe.  Students will be walked out by their teachers to the Rockwood Drop-off/Pick-up Zone.  Please remember to enter on Rockwood and pull all the way forward until you get to the front of the line for loading.  Students will come to the front of the line with a staff member who will assist students to load into the first two cars in the line to keep the cars flowing in the lane.  This is a busy time for traffic.  Please be cautious of our students who are approaching or entering their cars or crossing the street with their parents.  If desired, you may park in the community surrounding the school and walk to pick up your child at the Rockwood area.  Additionally, if you park across the street, we kindly request that you cross the street to pick up your child so that he/she can cross safely with you.  Also, please ensure that your child's teacher and/or the main office is aware of special arrangements such as walking home or meeting older siblings.

Think Together Program:  We are pleased to have the Think together program to provide after school care on site!  If you need an application, you can stop by our front office.  Applications are limited to space available.

Child Nutrition Services:  Breakfast and LUNCH are FREE for all! Child Nutrition Services will continue to provide free breakfast lunch for all students as part of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).  All households with students attending CEP schools must complete a simple funding form called the Local Control Funding Form (LCFF).  This simple form will be necessary on an annual basis for school sites who are under CEP.  La Jolla is a CEP school, so if you haven't already done so, please be sure to complete the application online (the application can be found at

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our La Jolla families for allowing me to serve as your Principal and for allowing your children to attend this amazing school.  Additional information regarding special events, school-wide programs, and opportunities for engagement/involvement can be found throughout our website.

Finally, our district theme this year is LIFT TO RISE; when we lift others, we also rise.  Let's come together as a community and LIFT one another so that we can all RISE together!
